On the Road Project

The On The Road project is a short, two to three minute news clip highlighting someone in our community that is is notable for something that they do or some character trait that they possess.  I worked with Bobby and Joe to spotlight BK Radhakrishnan, a man in my neighborhood that gives free rides to the Metro each morning.

This assignment highlights a lot of my strengths as well as some of my weaknesses.  First, it shows my strengths in video editing.  I did the majority of the editing for this project and most of the edits are clean and effective.  Also, I organized the interview, wrote most of the questions, decided what b-roll to get, and did the actual interviewing.  The interviews that we did were very useful and that was mostly due to me.  Also, I developed the human condition in this film – which was that there are still some pure, good people out there that do things because they genuinely want to help their friends.  This was shown effectively in the video.  However, the video also shows my weaknesses.  The voiceover, which I did, is not very good.  I think having another group member do the voiceover might have been more effective as my voice is not good for it and I mess up a lot.  To continue, I can be a control freak on projects, and do all the work.  In this case, I would not really trust anyone else to do any work so I did all of it, which was stressful for me.
Others have reacted really well to this project.  When we finished it, I sent the link to my parents.  My dad forwarded it to our interviews, and I thought that would be the end of it.  However, a week or two later my dad relayed to me a message from BK saying that BK had been receiving calls from relatives all over the world telling him how proud they were of him.  This made me really happy, because I know seeing our film and getting these calls showed BK what a wonderful person he is.
There were a few challenges in this project.  First, for our interview, Bobby and Joe arrived an hour later, with all of our equipment.  This was off putting because we had to change the interview times, which is very unprofessional. However, I think we had a very good final project and I’m proud of what we created and it’s effect on the community.
